President: Follow Up Education Reform with Innovation
Education reform should be followed up with innovation, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said here on Tuesday.
Speaking at the peak event of National Education Day 2010 at the State Palace, the president said that to restore the education system`s basic value, school curriculum, evaluation and teaching methods should be reviewed.
To develop future innovation, students should be motivated to advance their intellectual curiosity, imagination, and creativity.
“Teachers should give students constructive homework and let them build their creativity and imagination rather than just explaining and the students just listening,” the president said.
The head of state expressed hope that the National Innovation Committee could be formed on May 20, 2010 and it could cooperate with the community at large to speed up development of students innovation capability.
At the peak event of National Education Day attended by teachers and students with outstanding achievements, President Yudhoyono expressed hope that education would yield people with good character and knowledge.
The president added that amid today`s rapid global changes, the country`s human resources should continue to be developed to maintain the nation`s competitiveness.
“We must keep in mind that we can only survive amid the ongoing global changes if we have strong character, knowledge and skills in various fields of profession,” the president said.
People of good character, according to the president, should also have a sense of nationalism and patriotism.
